Technology giant Google prevented publishing of 2.28 million apps in Google Play Store in 2023 on violation of its new security measures.

The company in a blog post said that it has introduced new and enhanced security features, policy updates, and advanced machine learning technologies, alongside more stringent developer onboarding and review processes. With these norms, any app violating its new security features will be restricted from listing in its Play Store.

“Together with investments in our review tooling and processes, we identified bad actors and fraud rings more effectively and banned 333K bad accounts from Play for violations like confirmed malware, and repeated severe policy violations,” the company said in the blog post.

Moreover, around 200,000 app submissions were rejected for asking for permission to access background processes, location data or SMS. Many of the apps that were prevented to be published included several AI-based deepfake, malware and AI nude generator applications.

Google also introduced new Play Store transparency labelling to highlight VPN apps that have undergone an independent security review through ADA’s Mobile App Security Assessment (MASA). Such labelling empowers users to make informed decisions about app security and privacy.

2- 8 Daily Newspapers sue OpenAI & Microsoft

Eight daily newspapers including — The New York Daily News, The Chicago Tribune, The Orlando Sentinel, The Sun Sentinel of Florida, The San Jose Mercury News, The Denver Post, The Orange County Register and The St. Paul Pioneer Press- have filed complaint against OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing them of illegally using news article for training their AI chatbots.

All these publications are owned by Alden Global Capital. These publications said in the complaint that OpenAI and Microsoft are using millions of copyrighted articles to train and feed their generative AI products like ChatGPT & Microsoft Copilot. Though the lawsuit doesn’t demand any monetary damages, it asks for a jury trial. Many of the newspapers and content producers are up in arms against generative AI tools like ChatGPT as their contents are getting used without any compensations to these producers.
