If you recently graduated as an engineer in 2025, you may be concerned about how AI (artificial intelligence) might displace jobs. People discuss AI as if it is going to replace human beings, but things are not that simple. The world today is evolving rapidly and AI is a significant component of this evolution. Rather than fearing it, it’s best to prepare and understand how to collaborate with AI.

Soft skills are very important

Most new engineers believe they just need to know coding, mathematics, and technology. But soft skills such as effective communication, team culture, empathy towards others, and flexibility are equally essential. AI can perform numerous technical activities, but it will never be able to substitute the capability of humans to communicate and address issues in innovative ways. If you become proficient at these soft skills, you will be more likely to retain your position and advance your career.

Remain curious and continue learning

AI can provide fast responses, but it is humans who pose smart questions. Staying curious and asking good questions is immensely important. Individuals who are constantly learning, experimenting with new things, and inquiring “why” or “how” will perform better than those who are not. You need to know how to utilize AI tools to assist you, rather than blindly depending on them.

Prepare to make changes to your plans

In the past, individuals tended to work in one career or occupation throughout their lifetime. Today, studies reveal that most youths will end up with numerous jobs and careers. The career you trained for may not be available by the future. Therefore, prepare to acquire new skills and change your career if necessary. This is referred to as “pivoting,” and you will need to have this skill.

AI transforms the way we work, not employment

AI is a helper. For instance, AI can assist musicians in composing songs or assist doctors in finding new drugs. It doesn’t substitute for humans; it makes work quicker and smarter. If you master how to work with AI, you will have more possibilities.

Learning how to learn is the most valuable skill

What you might learn in college could become obsolete in a matter of years. The most crucial thing is to understand how to continue learning new things in life. This will keep you of value in any career.

It is acceptable to worry, but do not give up. AI can assist you in doing a better job if you remain inquisitive, learn soft skills, and prepare yourself to adapt. The future may be tough, but it can be full of new opportunities as well.
